Sara Vanderbeek

These batiks are layered with vibrant, contemporary hieroglyphs depicting the human experience. They are contained within a foliage of botanical forms in front of stark darkness. The human tendency towards violence and destruction, community and tribalism, is framed by the nature from which we rose.

"Working on fabric in the batik tradition, painter Sara Vanderbeek expands her interests in tropical patterns to boldly critique colonial forces and cultural appropriation." -Andrea Mellard, Director of Public Programs & Community Engagement, The Contemporary Austin.
