Thread Count
A Female-Centric Confrontation of Tradition

“In which five extraordinary Austin textile artists present a female-centric confrontation of tradition. Steef Crombach, Rakhee Jain Desai, Magdalena Jarkowiec, Melissa Knight, and Sara Vanderbeek.”

Thread Count is a show dedicated to fabric art by five female Austin-based artists. The artists explore the limits and possibilities of fabric art and batik working in their own compelling themes and styles. A common thread between the artists’ work is the tension they feel navigating traditional female roles in their art, lives, and the art-world as a whole. Other themes that come forward in this self-organized and curated show are immigrant identity, belonging, the exploration of cultural differences and expressions, the interweaving of community, the human problem of the body as a cultural and biological entity, and the trials of dealing with mental illness in the American health care system.
