🌴🌴🌴 (Palm Tree x3)
Sara Vanderbeek and Jenn Wilson
May 5 - June 3, 2017
ICOSA Gallery

In 1946, Louis Réard debuted his revolutionary new swimsuit design to audiences in Paris. He said it would split the atoms of fashion in a nuclear explosion; he called it the “Bikini” after famed site in Marshall Islands where the United States tested the nuclear atomic weapons and later the Hydrogen bomb.
The Bikini has come to symbolize the tropical paradise vacation but few remember the destructive connotations of its origin. In 🌴🌴🌴, Sara Vanderbeek and Jenn Wilson explore the dualistic meanings of Paradise. From Sara Vanderbeek’s Hawaiian shirt paintings that explore the commercialization of tropical culture to Jenn Wilson’s paintings of Arcadia and mythic utopias, both artists explore the darker side of the Ideal through painting.
